IMPORTANT PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTINUING ON THIS SITE:

binomo real account Homesforkatrina.org DOES NOT have direct contact with evacuees. We are working with local relief organizations to provide them the offers made on this site to place evacuees that have shown up at communities across the country. The information entered on this site is NOT and will NOT be available to the general public.

Homesforkatrina.org IS (and has been from their launch on August 31, 2005) collecting generous offers of vacant housing (homes, apartment buildings, hotels, etc) and space within people's homes and working day and night to find reputable organizations taking on the effort of placement and ensuring the safety and privacy of evacuees and those offering to help. Before we will share the data we have collected we will ensure the following:
  • The organization we are sharing your data with is reputable. This means that they are either a major relief organization, approved by a major relief organization or have been screened and approved by Homesforkatrina.org as a valid and trustworthy civic or religious organization.
  • The organization has agreed to serve as the broker between those in need and those offering their homes and will ensure that background checks are completed on both parties.
  • Ideally, this organization would also put the two parties in contact with local organizations in their area that are offering help once the person is placed.
binomo feedback We are currently in contact with local chapters of the International Rescue Committee, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, the United Way and Church World Service. We are also in contact with a few local religious organizations in the disaster area that are housing evacuees sent from Red Cross. We have registered with the National Emergency Resource Registry at www.SWERN.gov and some state Emergency Management agencies. We have also contacted various federal government agencies.

If you want to list your housing with a website similar to ours that have call centers and volunteers in contact with evacuees, then we suggest one of the following. Please note: the following sites are NOT affiliated with homesforkatrina.org.

Our Proposal for Sharing Help Safely:
To protect those offering or needing help, we are suggesting that a few screening, placement and support steps be followed to help ensure that people are not placed in dangerous situations and have all the resources and support they need once placed.
  • Those needing housing should be working through a group that is working in conjunction with or is an office of a well-established relief organization/agency. This group will be able to serve as a broker for the evacuee to those offering help and ensure the evacuee has the financial, emotional and medical support they will need after being placed.
  • A background check should be run on both parties to eliminate any violent or sexual offenders from the system. Ideally, this would also include reference checking where possible and verification that the person in need is an evacuee.
  • Any placement made should be tracked in some way while still ensuring the privacy of the evacuee. Then the relief organization along with local civic and religious organizations should be available to provide any help needed by either party.
You can find more details on our proposed process for placement in the Procedures, Roles and Responsibilities and Process documents.

What You Can Do:
